north-center-chicago-ilThe charming community of North Center is located on the north side of Chicago, bounded by Montrose Avenue, Diversey Parkway, Ravenswood Avenue and the Chicago River.

Within the North Center area are the neighborhoods of Roscoe Village, St. Ben’s, Hamlin Park and Northcenter.

North Center’s history is deeply rooted in European cultural influences, and that history can be seen in the architectural charm of the homes and buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Beautiful trees are abundant along the residential and busy commercial streets, giving the area a presence of natural beauty.

The North center neighborhood is also a great find in terms of real estate–the cost of houses here are considerably less than in other north side neighborhoods that are closer to the lake or the Loop. With luxuries that downtown residences don’t normally see, such as big yards and wide lots, it’s not surprising that North Center real estate values have continued to rise as it steadily matures into a delightful area of the city with beautiful homes, great food, and a low-key neighborhood vibe.

What kind of real estate will you find here? There are a few single-family homes, which typically fall between $700,000 and $1.5 Million, with a few fixer-uppers to be had in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. There are riverfront condos on the west end, and Victorians with huge porches to the east.

A: I suggest to clients that they make a list of what they want their day to day life to look like. That list might include things like: easy access to public transportation; ½ mile from the the lake; tree-lined streets with mostly single family homes; close to bars and restaurants; top level public elementary school; trendy, up and coming… start big, winnow down and prioritize. I also suggest that clients look at a few places in several neighborhoods to get an understanding of what each neighborhood offers. It’s all about options, choices and priorities.
