From the timeless mansions of Astor Street to the magnificent high-rises of Lake Shore Drive, the Gold Coast is truly an inspirational setting from which to savor life in the Windy City.

Despite the neighborhood’s well-documented affluence, the Gold Coast real estate choices and prices are surprisingly diverse. Housing styles are equally diverse. In addition to the apartment buildings that line Lake Shore Drive, the Gold Coast offers walk-ups, town homes, row homes and a number of contemporary high-rises.

Not surprisingly, the price for a detached single-family property in the Gold Coast can reach well into the multi-millions. Of course, most of these homes are three or more stories and have up to eight bedrooms, attached garages or coach houses, and are every bit the lap of luxury. When homes start in the millions, you know there are some serious real estate opportunities to be had, and upgraded amenities and fine finishes become standard. The long-settled nature of the Gold Coast real estate means that home buyers have few new construction options north of Division Street. New luxury high-rises have been developed during the past 10 years immediately south of what had traditionally been considered the Gold Coast, extending its boundaries.

Within one square mile, the Gold Coast offers lively beaches, internationally renowned boutiques, incredible cuisine and vibrant nightlife. It also happens to be one of Chicago’s most family-friendly neighborhoods offering a number of top public and private schools, beautiful parks and cultural attractions.

A: I suggest to clients that they make a list of what they want their day to day life to look like. That list might include things like: easy access to public transportation; ½ mile from the the lake; tree-lined streets with mostly single family homes; close to bars and restaurants; top level public elementary school; trendy, up and coming… start big, winnow down and prioritize. I also suggest that clients look at a few places in several neighborhoods to get an understanding of what each neighborhood offers. It’s all about options, choices and priorities.
